Extension or Bookmarklet: Which to use?

Q.  What is a bookmarklet?

Bookmarklets are little pieces of JavaScript which are stored within a bookmark that add particular functionalities to the browser you’re using. The bookmarklets provided by iterasi allow you to archive a page and to review your archives.

Q.  How does the iterai bookmarklet compare to the iterasi browser extension?

Think of the bookmarklet as the "light" version of the browser extension. While both the browser extension and bookmarklet archive pages, there are some differences which may be important to you.

  • Fidelity of the page capture - iterasi prides itself on the quality of the archived pages. Our goal is for your archived pages to appear exactly as they did when they displayed in your browser. The challenge when using bookmarklets is that our servers are archiving the pages instead of your local computer. Because we do not have your locally stored cookies and other browser personalizations, the page which displays on our servers in the datacenter may be different from the page which displays on your computer. If these differences are important for you, then you should consider using the iterasi browser extension instead of the iterasi bookmarklet.
  • Sites which require credentials - If you wish to archive sites that require you to login, you should consider using the browser extension so that you can manually login prior to initiating the archive process.
  • Timing of the archive - The iterasi browser extension begins archiving your page the instant you initiate the process. Conversely, the bookmarklet sends a request to servers in our datacenter to archive your page. There could be a few seconds to a few minutes delay in this process. If the page you are archiving could substantially change within a few minutes, you may want to consider using the browser extension rather than the bookmarklet.
  • Compatibility with other OS/Browsers - To obtain a high fidelity archive, the browser extension is specialized to the operating system and browser upon which it is run. Our extension currently supports IE 7 & 8 on Windows Vista and XP, and Firefox 2, 3 & 3.1 beta 2 on Windows Vista and XP and Mac OS X 10.5. If you wish to archive a page and do not have the OS/Browser configuration to support our extension, then the bookmarklet may be for you. The bookmarklet will allow many more browser and OS combinations to be supported.
  • Additional features in the browser extension - The iterasi browser extension has many more features which are not available in the bookmarklet. Some of these are the ability to schedule jobs to run when you wish, the importing of bookmarks from third party sources such as delicious and magnolia, and the ability to review 'suggested tags' prior to archiving the page. These are great features, and if you wish to use them, consider installing the iterasi browser extension.

Q.  How does the bookmarklet work?

To use the iterasi Add Page bookmarklet:

1. Navigate to an interesting page.
2. Click on the 'iterasi: add page' bookmarklet. The archive form will display.
3. Customize the title, tags, folders, public/private settings, etc. and click on OK.
4. Close the iterasi confirmation page to return to your original page.
5. Within a few minutes your archived page will appear in your iterasi account.

When you use the bookmarklet, the URL address of the page is sent to servers in our datacenter. The servers receive the URL, load the page into a browser on our servers, archive the page and store it in your iterasi account.
