MonoTouch allows developers to create C# and .NET based applications that run on the iPhone and can take advantage of the iPhone APIs as well as reusing both code and libraries that have been built for .NET as well as existing skills. Developers can use the iPhone simulator to test their applications as well as using MonoTouch on the final device and ship applications to the Apple AppStore for distribution. The Technology The iPhone from Apple has two important requirements. The device does not support JIT engines at the kernel level to reduce the exposure to malware and the agreement to become an iPhone developer requires that the developer do not use any scripting engines or JIT technologies. To satisfy these technical and legal requirements, MonoTouch is delivered as a static compiler that turns .NET executables and libraries into native applications. There is no JIT or interpreted shipped with your application, only native code. This is built on top of Mono's Ahead of Time Compilation technology, the same foundation that powers Unity3D for the iPhone  ( http://unity3d.com/unity/features/iphone-publishing.html ) . This means that MonoTouch is a full solution for developing applications that can be distributed with Apple's AppStore but it also means that there are limitations on what developers can do with C# and other .NET languages.
