GIANTS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK This is how much faith I have in the preseason. There was no team who looked worse in the final exhibition games than Washington and I’m still picking them to beat the defending champions. The Giants have lost five of the past seven openers and I am always suspect of how fast the Super Bowl winners can leave the gate. Washington won at New York last December, but weather was a big factor and the Giants did a lot of growing up after that. The Giants are more seasoned, although they'll miss Michael Strahan more in 2008 than they did Jeremy Shockey in 2007. Redskins 21, Giants 17 Giants 23, Redskins 17 CINCINNATI BENGALS (-1) at BALTIMORE RAVENS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK Ravens QB Joe Flacco is starting his first game. He might have won the job anyway but he was given the start when the guys ahead of him went down with injuries. Flacco is being touted as the future but that doesn’t mean it has to start on Sunday. The Bengals just have to be giddy to put an off-season behind them that didn’t produce a lot of good news. New Ravens coach John Harbaugh has ramped up accountability and training camp intensity, but not much has changed for the Bengals aside from Chad Johnson's formal transformation to Mr. Ocho Cinco. Bengals 23, Ravens 16 Ravens 17, Bengals 14 NY JETS (-3) at MIAMI DOLPHINS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK When in doubt, believe in Brett. All eyes are on the man from Kiln, Miss., and he usually puts on a nice show. The Dolphins could not be as bad as last season, but it won’t take a huge leap to surpass the 2007 standard. A wild card in this is the performance of Ricky Williams. If he is running well early, the Jets may get a feeling of impending doom. The Jets have won six of their last seven against Miami, and the Fish figure to need more than New York castoff Chad Pennington to turn the tide. Bill Parcells' latest reclamation project will stay on hold at least one more week. Jets 17, Dolphins 14 Jets 27, Dolphins 20 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (+16½) at NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK Tom Brady sat out the entire preseason and the Patriots should still roll in this game. New England does not appear to have had a drop off from 2007 and if there is a team that can’t wait to erase the final game of its 2007 season, it is New England. Brady will play, the Patriots' timing will be impeccable and Kansas City will look a lot like the same team that had its clock consistently cleaned while going into an 0-9 tailspin to finish 2007. Patriots 31, Chiefs 17 Patriots 41, Chiefs 10 HOUSTON TEXANS (+7) at PITTSBURGH STEELERS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK The Steelers are at home and this appears to be a good opener for them. However, if you listed the possible upsets in Week 1, this would be at the top of my list. The Texans will be a tricky team to pick with and against all year. The oft-overlooked Texans were 7-3 outside their back-breaking AFC South schedule last season, but they still can't pound the ball and they don't beat marquee opponents on the road. They'll get a moral victory that's still a defeat. Steelers 24, Texans 20 Steelers 23, Texans 20 JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (-3) at TENNESSEE TITANS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK The Vince Young era has to start sometime in Tennessee so why not the opener at home? Titans RB Chris Johnson is my pick for rookie of the year. No time like the present. "Let Vince be Vince" should be the Titans motto. The Jaguars are the only team that manhandled the ever-physical Titans last season, in a November victory. A recently arrested Fred Taylor will be in a foul mood, and Tennessee is looking under rocks, trying to find its offense. Titans 19, Jaguars 14 Jaguars 24, Titans 16 DETROIT LIONS (-3) at ATLANTA FALCONS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK Matt Ryan should call Joe Flacco so they can compare rookie notes. Ryan has a lot of good ball ahead of him. But it is asking a lot for him to carry this team early. This also should begin the Jon Kitna-to-Calvin Johnson combo that Lions fans have been waiting a year for. It is tough to stick your neck out on Detroit but I think I just did it. Thanks to the schedule maker, one of these wretched teams will likely open 1-0. Detroit was outscored 158-58 while losing its last four road games of 2007, but facing a rookie quarterback should cure its fear of flying. Lions 31, Falcons 14 Lions 27, Falcons 13 SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (Pick 'em) at BUFFALO BILLS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK On another day I might have picked the Bills just because they are playing at home. Got nothing here and will watch for future evaluation. The Bills had some of the NFL's worst team rankings in 2007 despite playing in one of its softest divisions. The Seahawks were a miserable 1-4 last season in games played in the Eastern time zone, but are the superior franchise. Seahawks 21, Bills 20 Seahawks 20, Bills 17 TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (+3) at NEW ORLEANS SAINTS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK The city can use a bright spot and they should get one on Sunday. I am still a believer that there is greatness in Reggie Bush and Drew Brees has already proved his bona fides. New Orleans cannot afford to come out flat or the Bucs could make this ugly. After Hurricane Katrina, the Saints are accustomed to evacuation drills. Having survived the latest threat, their city's sense of resolve will be deafening, the Superdome will rock and the Bucs will humbly await the rematch at their place. Saints 35, Bucs 28 Saints 34, Bucs 24 ST. LOUIS RAMS (+7) at PHILADELPHIA EAGLES REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK A healthy Donovan McNabb could mean an MVP season for him and a couple of extra playoff weeks for the Eagles. Philly fans have been a little impatient with their quarterback, but that should end this season. Lots of regrouping going on here. The Eagles should prevail, if only because Donovan McNabb's next season-ending injury likely won't surface until November. But the Rams' image has been smeared by all those 2007 injuries; look for them to cover against a too-fat spread. Eagles 35, Rams 24 Eagles 27, Rams 24 DALLAS COWBOYS (-5) at CLEVELAND BROWNS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK The Browns had a tough preseason and quarterback Derek Anderson comes into the game banged up. The Cowboys have a Super Bowl look to them and that means a fast start is mandatory with no "hard knocks." One of these over-rated teams is going to suffer an immediate setback, and it figures to be Cleveland. The Browns have been outscored 80-34 while going 0-3 in season-openers coached by Romeo Crennel. Cowboys 28, Browns 14 Cowboys 31, Browns 20 CAROLINA PANTHERS (+9½) at SAN DIEGO CHARGERS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK If I were a betting man in Las Vegas, I would jump on Carolina with both feet. It will be hard to win in San Diego and you always want to go with the best man on the field. And that is L.T. Still, Carolina is one of my surprise picks in the NFC, and if they jumped up and bit the Chargers on opening day I would not be the most surprised man in America. The Chargers have won six consecutive home games, and all were routs except a two-point defeat of Indianapolis. L.T. has fresh wheels after essentially sitting out the preseason, and will come bursting out of the gate. Chargers 28, Panthers 24 Chargers 27, Panthers 17 ARIZONA CARDINALS (-2½) at SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK This does not look to be the best game of the day. I am a Matt Leinart fan but I also believe that Kurt Warner is not the worst choice to begin the season. The Cardinals will prove that going with a proven but over-the-hill quarterback beats San Francisco's devotion to the QB-by-lottery theory. And is it too early to ask where Mike Nolan will be working in 2009? Cardinals 17, 49ers 14 Cardinals 31, 49ers 20 CHICAGO BEARS (+9½) at INDIANAPOLIS COLTS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK This one has 'uh, oh' written all over it. If Peyton Manning is anywhere near game ready, it could get out of hand early. However, I will admit to being one of the few people in this land who thinks Kyle Orton is destined for greatness. No joke. Even if Manning's knee is seriously ailing, the Colts still will have the best quarterback on the field. And Indy is near-impossible to beat in September, with the Patriots administering the only blotch on a 16-1 mark since 2003. Colts 38, Bears 20 Colts 27, Bears 13 MINNESOTA VIKINGS (+3) at GREEN BAY PACKERS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK All hail Aaron Rodgers. He doesn’t have to worry about the Vikings knocking him around, the Green Bay fans have already batted him for not being named Brett. I don’t see the Packers brain trust allowing him to get into too much trouble. He’ll do enough to win and not enough to make them forget the Jets QB. Rodgers is going to get hit, and the Packers will quickly realize what they miss most about Brett Favre is his durability. The Titletown decline begins now. Packers 21, Vikings 14 Vikings 23, Packers 17 DENVER BRONCOS (-3) at OAKLAND RAIDERS REID'S PICK TOM'S PICK An upset special because every card has to have one. My faith is in Darren McFadden to be a star and for JaMarcus Russell to show glimpses of why he was the No. 1 overall pick. The Russell era isn't quite ready to hit full stride, because of the deep-tissue damage Al Davis has done to this franchise. Against his old boss, Mike Shanahan will capitalize on the breathing room.
