Starting next week, an introduction to belly dancing class will be offered at the Newark Campus of Ohlone. Taught by Deborah Lemon, a Spanish instructor and award-winning belly dancer, the class will not offer any credits. The class will be held at the Newark Campus on Monday and Wednesdays from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. The classes start on Oct. 6 and 8, and will continue until Dec. 1 and 3, respectively, in Room NC1407. Belly dancing, known as raqs sharqi in Arabic, is a Middle Eastern traditional dance that may have originated in Egypt. Although belly dancers were depicted in Persian minature paintings as the early as 12th and 13th centuries, belly dancing did not gain national recognition until the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Naiya, Lemon’s professional belly dancing pseudonym, has won numerous accolades in this field and won a 2008 Belly Dancer of the year Duet award, as well as a 2008 Santa Cruz Double Crown award. In the belly dancing class, Lemon will be teaching the various fundamentals of this traditional dance form. When asked for an attractive feature of the class, Lemon replied, “This class doesn’t require students to have a perfect body shape or be athletic. In fact, anyone can learn belly dancing because it is basically an art of getting to know one’s body shape and how to dance with it.” The belly dancing class is a multi-national combination of basic steps and movements from Lebanese, Egyptian and Turkish forms of belly dancing.
